Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are weeks away from their latest effort in the MCU with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the franchise’s fourth solo Spider-Man movie. Bringing back Tom Holland as Peter Parker, the sequel will put the titular hero into an epic street-level adventure against major villains like Scorpion and the Hand, all while dealing with a scary physical evolution that could change his life forever. If that was not enough, he will also still be dealing with the lingering effects of everything that happened in the MCU’s biggest solo movie, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Holland’s Phase 4 solo film concluded on a shocking note, as Peter Parker asked Doctor Strange to cast a spell that made the world forget about Peter’s existence to stop the multiverse from imploding. This plot point is already confirmed to cast a huge cloud over Peter’s life in Brand New Day, as the movie’s first trailer teased him revisiting the letter he intended to give to Zendaya’s MJ and Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds, in which he told them for a second time about his secret identity. However, while Strange’s magic is highly potent, one new tease for the movie may set up an interesting wrinkle in this major spell.
Speaking with IGN Benelux, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland teased more about the effects of Doctor Strange’s memory-wiping spell from the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Before being cut off by his co-star and wife, Zendaya, Holland reiterated how nobody in the MCU knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man “apart from one person,” but he did not go further with the comment:
Tom Holland: “I think no one remembers that I’m Spider-Man, apart from one person…”
Zendaya: “Nobody remembers that you’re Peter Parker. They know Spider-Man.”
Tom Holland: “One person.”
While Holland did not offer any specific clues about who may still know Peter Parker is Spider-Man in the MCU, one prevailing theory could point to that character being the Hulk. Mark Ruffalo is confirmed to be back in the MCU in Brand New Day as Bruce Banner, with the recently released second trailer showing him not knowing Peter Parker when Peter asks about mutating DNA. However, this movie will also reintroduce Banner’s Savage Hulk form for the first time since Avengers: Infinity War.
This could very well be the “one person” Holland is referring to, as the Hulk may have known about Peter’s secret identity before going dormant at the end of Phase 3 and the Multiverse Saga. While this plot point is sure to be kept hidden until the movie is released, Holland’s quotes certainly build up plenty of intrigue for exactly how Peter’s existence in this new world will be addressed.
