Explore the untold legacy of women in animation at the Muskegon Museum of Art’s new exhibition, featuring works from early storytelling to groundbreaking animation t

When telling the story of how animation as an art form has evolved, too often, it was a man’s story. But the truth is, women have played a critical role.

The Muskegon Museum of Art has a new exhibition, HerStory of Animation: Mary Blair & Beyond.

It tells the story of women in animation, exploring their contributions from the earliest pre-cinematic forms in ceramic narratives, shadow puppetry and magic lanterns, to a century of hand-drawn, stop motion, and experimental animation.

Museum visitors will see animation production artwork, artifacts, ephemera and imagery, all brought together to celebrate the artistic advancements made by women to define some of animation’s most memorable moments.

The exhibition runs through September 27, 2026.
