It has been announced that well known Cork businessman Jack Mulcahy has died.
Mr Mulcahy spent much of his working life at the Chicken Inn, a business that became a familiar fixture in Cork’s English Market, and through which he became a well-known and respected figure in the city.
Outside of business, Mr Mulcahy was “deeply involved in public and community life”, his family said in a statement released this week.
He was a longstanding supporter of Fianna Fáil in Cork North Central, served as a peace commissioner, and was a proud supporter of Glen Rovers.
“He also gave generously of his time to supporting young prisoners in Cork Prison, a reflection of his lifelong commitment to helping others within the community,” said Mr Mulcahy’s family.
“Jack will be remembered not only for his contribution to Cork’s business and community life, but above all as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and family man.”
Established in 1955, the Chicken Inn was built by Mr Mulcahy and his wife Mary into a much-loved institution within the English Market.
Today, the business continues under the stewardship of the third generation of the Mulcahy family.
Mr Mulcahy is survived by his wife Mary and children John, Tim, and Denis, as well as grandchildren Judy, Ali, Rebecca, Jack, Molly, Kate, Luke, Avery, Carrie, and Lucy-Jane; daughters-in-law Kathleen, Monica and Fiona; sister Vera; extended family, and friends.
A Requiem Mass will take place on Monday at 11.30am in Christ King Church, Turner’s Cross, which will be live-streamed.
Burial afterwards at St Finbarr’s Cemetery, Glasheen Rd.
The family said that donations can be made in lieu of flowers, if desired, to Marymount Hospice or the Irish Cancer Society.
