NEVER SO BRAVE has certainly been found a winning opportunity, as a Group One winner in a Group Three race. The Andrew Balding-trained five-year-old is likely to be better suited to this more conventional track, after he underperformed at Epsom last time. He never got going after a sluggish outing in a race that was won by prominent racers.
The selection is clear of all rivals on official ratings, except the sole three-year-old in the race, Saber Strike, who arrives after flopping at Royal Ascot. He was backed as if defeat was out of the question last week, which clearly indicates how well he is regarded, but for me, I want to see him win a Group event before backing him.
Each-way plays:13:40 Newcastle – Yorkshire (each-way)
I think that likely favourite, Supido, is worth taking on, back on the all-weather. The improved turf performer is unplaced in both starts on a synthetic surface. YORKSHIRE is one runner who thrives on the all-weather, having scored four wins from seven starts, including on this Tapeta surface. I believe he is a decent each-way shout, especially as a well-handicapped horse — now 2lb below his last winning mark.
FRANKIES DREAM arrives in excellent form, after a hat-trick of placed efforts, including at this venue last time. Despite being raised 2lb since those good runs, his form of a Beverley third (two starts ago) catches the eye. The second has subsequently bolted up in a Newmarket handicap, suggesting our selection is ready to strike. This represents a solid opportunity to at least reach the frame, at what appears to be a fair each-way price.
15:15 Newcastle – Align The Stars (each-way)
This year’s prestigious Northumberland Plate is, as ever, a highly competitive contest. ALIGN THE STARS looks overpriced, judged by his form over stamina-sapping distances. The Mark Johnston-trained Sea The Stars gelding is a dual 1m6f winner and has scored over two miles on the all-weather at Kempton. He is 2lb below his highest-winning mark, and he holds realistic place ambitions.
