Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will also visit Ireland today to mark the start of Ireland’s EU Presidency.
Ireland will take over the Presidency of the European Council this morning.
The rotating six month Presidency will see hundreds of meetings of European Ministers and leaders here throughout the rest of the year.
Ireland hasn’t held the Presidency of the European Council since 2013 and will now play host country to many EU summits through the second half of the year.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has set out three main policy platforms for the Presidency – competitiveness, values and security.
He’ll host the Council President Antonio Costa in Dublin later before the official launch of the Presidency – which will take place at Dublin Castle.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will also visit Ireland today to mark the start of Ireland’s EU Presidency.
He’ll meet with Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris, and take part in the opening ceremony being held later.
Zelensky has been invited to mark the start of the EU Presidency, to highlight Ireland’s support of Ukraine and its application to join the European Union.
Some protests are planned for the area by groups who are wary of the increasing defence co-operation in Europe and what it means for Irish neutrality.
It comes as the European Parliament has released new survey results which report 89 per cent of Irish people believe the EU has benefitted the country – the fifth highest result in the bloc.
While 93 per cent say the EU should be more united to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
