Two gardaí were injured in what has been described as an “unprovoked, violent attack” in Dundalk.
The Garda Representative Association (GRA) said that the incident occurred outside Dundalk Garda Station at 7am on Tuesday morning.
In a statement, gardaí said that an off-duty male garda was assaulted by a man in the carpark of the garda station.
While attempting to arrest the man, aged in his 20s, a second male garda was also assaulted.
Both members received medical treatment and remain off duty.
Welfare supports have been made available to the affected garda members.
Gardaí say the assault incidents remain under investigation.
In a post on X, the GRA said: “Another day, sadly another attack on Gardaí simply serving their local community”.
“Two Gardaí suffered injuries after an unprovoked, violent attack outside Dundalk Station on Tuesday at 7am. There is never an excuse for attacks on our members, the job is difficult enough”.
