British photographer and peace advocate Giles Duley has been named as the recipient of the 2025 Tipperary International Peace Award.
Mr Duley is being honoured for his work documenting the human impact of conflict and supporting communities recovering from war.
For more than two decades, he has worked in conflict zones including Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine, Rwanda, Lebanon and South Sudan, focusing on the resilience and humanity of people affected by violence.
In 2011, while working in Afghanistan, Mr Duley lost both legs and his left arm after stepping on an improvised explosive device.
He returned to the country 18 months later to continue documenting the lives of civilians living with the consequences of conflict.
He later founded the Legacy of War Foundation, which supports projects helping communities rebuild in countries including Ukraine, Rwanda and Lebanon.
Announcing the award, Honorary Secretary of the Tipperary Peace Convention Martin Quinn said Mr Duley’s life and work embodied the values of courage, compassion and hope, adding that his photography and humanitarian work had helped shine a light on the human cost of war while supporting people to rebuild their lives.
“At a time when war and division dominate headlines across the globe, Giles reminds us that peace begins with ordinary people, with compassion, solidarity and the courage to stand alongside those who suffer,” Mr Quinn said.
Mr Duley said he was “truly honoured and deeply humbled” to receive the award, adding that his work had always been about “documenting love, not war” and highlighting the humanity that endures even in the darkest circumstances.
“Peace begins with people,” Mr Duley said. “We are living through tumultuous and painful times where many feel overwhelmed and helpless. But my faith in humanity remains undiminished.”
The Tipperary International Peace Award has previously been presented to figures including Nelson Mandela, Mary Robinson, Malala Yousafzai and Ban Ki-moon.
The 2025 award will be presented at a ceremony in Tipperary in September.
