An urgent recall has been issued for a brand of cheese sold in Lidl due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland warned consumers on Friday that a batch of Deluxe Spanish Castellano Sheeps’ Cheese sold in Lidl was being recalled as it contained the harmful disease-causing bacterium.
In healthy people, symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
However, in people who are more vulnerable, the infection can be severe and can lead to serious complications.
People who are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections include pregnant women, infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is, on average, three weeks but can range between three and 70 days.

The recalled cheese is branded Deluxe Spanish Castellano Sheeps’ Cheese with a 150 gram pack size. The batch code is 100534252. Its use by date is 08/11/2026 and country of origin is Spain.
The food safety watchdog told the public that recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale in Lidl stores.
Retailers are requested to remove the implicated batch from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale and consumers are advised not to eat the implicated batch.
