A dedicated Buncrana fireman is set to enjoy his retirement after a career spanning over three decades.

Philip Doherty was joined by his colleagues from the Buncrana Fire Station this week as he called time on his career after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 62.

The Buncrana Fire Station have paid tribute to his 33-year dedication to saving lives in his community, saying they would miss their colleague and good friend.

“About two years ago the retirement age for retained firefighters in Ireland changed from 60 to 62 years of age, lucky for us in Buncrana, this meant that Philip Doherty could stay another two years, and we were delighted,” the station said following his retirement.

“It came in just as Philip was about to retire at 60. Today is Philip’s 62nd birthday, and so he also retires today from Buncrana Fire Service after serving (here for) 33 years and 1 month, an exceptional commitment to our community.”

“We will miss our colleague and good friend for his work ethic, calm nature under pressure and his vast experience which is hard to replace, and his sense of humour which was also second to none.”

“We would like to wish himself and Caroline a long and healthy retirement from the service, which after 33 years and 1 month will be well deserved.”

“All the best Philip, take care , from all of us here at the Buncrana Fire Station and the surrounding communities.”
