An urgent recall has been issued for specific batches of a salmon product sold in Tesco stores across Ireland due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Tesco shoppers across Ireland are being urged to check their fridges and freezers after an urgent food safety alert was issued for specific batches of a popular salmon product.
Certain batches of Tesco Finest Scottish Cherrywood Smoked Salmon, priced at €6, have been recalled due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
In healthy people, listeria infection generally causes either no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms or gastroenteritis. However, in more vulnerable people, the infection can occasionally spread to the central nervous system causing meningitis.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) advised the public not to eat the implicated batches. It said: “The below batches of Tesco Finest Scottish Cherrywood Smoked Salmon are being recalled due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Retailers are requested to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale. Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated batches.”

Explaining the ‘nature of the danger’, the FSAI added: “In healthy people, symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. However, in people who are more vulnerable, the infection can be severe and can lead to serious complications.

“People who are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections include pregnant women, infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is, on average, three weeks but can range between three and 70 days.”
