(WJAR) — The Atlantic Shark Institute shared a rare underwater video of a great white shark off Block Island.
According to officials, the Atlantic Shark Institute Executive Director Jon Dodd and Mystic Aquarium’s Sarah Callan were in the water searching for a male humpback whale carcass last week.
The two spent a few hours searching a 50-square-mile area for the carcass.
Officials said when they spotted the carcass, they also observed an 8-foot juvenile great white shark circling the whale.

The organization shared a 20-second video of the shark.
“The conditions were perfect, the seas were calm and the scene was like nothing I could have imagined,” Callan said. “It was my first white shark I’d ever seen and it was amazing to see in person.”
The Atlantic Shark Institute said this may be the first instance of a white shark being photographed in Rhode Island waters.
“The size and vastness of the ocean can sometimes lead you to believe that you’re trying to find a needle in a haystack, but every once in a while everything aligns and you get the experience of a lifetime, and the video to prove it,” Dodd said.
