A man from Manchester allegedly assaulted a garda by spitting at her, and when he was brought into the dock at Cork District Court he noisily cleared his throat and spat at the glass.
Judge David Waters said: “I have just seen him come into court, sit down, and immediately spit at the table in front of him.”
In the course of the court hearing, the defendant, Owen Wilson, aged 48, of Cornerstore Day Centre, Denmark Road, Manchester, shouted frequently that he was homeless, in physical agony, and said: “Blah, blah, blah, you are talking rubbish,” as the judge and Sergeant David Fleming were speaking.
There was no garda objection to bail on conditions.
However, Judge Waters said that on the defendant’s appearance in court he could not rely on the defendant being in a position to give undertakings required to be released on bail.
“I don’t think this man is capable of understanding the terms of any bond… it appears to me it is doubtful he can understand the nature and consequence of his actions,” Judge Waters said.
The defendant was remanded in custody until Friday, July 10.
The assault and threatening behaviour charges against Owen Wilson refer to Anglesea Street on Monday.
