Mega Mewtwo Y descended upon Times Square as part of Pokemon GO’s 10th anniversary celebration event.
Pokemon GO is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. As part of the festivities, Niantic and The Pokemon Company held a special event stream live from Times Square in New York. While trainers gathered to commemorate the mobile juggernaut’s first decade, they were soon joined by Mewtwo, who took over all of the area’s Pokemon Gyms. As trainers prepared to do battle, they watched as Mewtwo took over all of the Times Square screens and Mega Evolved into Mega Mewtwo Y.
The Mega Raid featured over 1,500 trainers, all gathered simultaneously, to face the ultra-powerful Mega Mewtwo Y, which featured a CP level of over 99,000. It was one of the largest single raids in the game’s history, surpassing the 1,000-person raid from this year’s Pokemon GO Tour: Kalos weekend, which was held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. Near the end of this raid, all players were prompted to hold up their devices for a special Unity Attack that would weaken Mega Mewtwo Y long enough for a Master Ball throw. All trainers who caught Mewtwo received one with maxed-out stats.
It was an amazing event to behold, as rarely does any game get to do a total takeover of Times Square in this manner. It didn’t come without a few issues, as the stream attempted to check in on trainers throughout the raid and found some of them lagging severely or dropping out of the raid due to connection issues. Of the 1,500 or so to join the battle, a few hundred trainers unfortunately got dropped.

This is only the beginning of a big weekend for Pokemon GO. This weekend will see Mega Mewtwo Y and Mega Mewtwo X make their debut as part of the Pokemon GO Fest: Global event. It will mark the first appearance for these Mega evolutions across all regions, having first appeared at the in-person GO Fest events in Tokyo, Chicago, and Copenhagen earlier this year.
