While any county who reaches an All-Ireland final will rightly soak up the atmosphere in the couple of weeks before the game, there seems to be a different attitude towards Mayo supporters when they reach that stage.

As one of the most loyally followed teams in the country, they receive a huge amount of goodwill on any occasion that they are playing for the Sam Maguire. Of course, their track record of losing finals means that the ‘hype’ in the lead up to the fixture is often blamed for their failure to get over the line on the day.

Unsurprisingly, this narrative had already developed ahead of the game against Kerry next week. Joe Brolly had this warning for Mayo supporters in the aftermath of their win over Louth:

At the final whistle, we embraced — I’m only human — and promised ourselves that this year would be different.

Of course it won’t be.

Those comments have not gone down out west.

Lee Keegan not impressed with Joe Brolly Mayo take

Many feel that the characterisation of Mayo supporters as completely losing the run of themselves in the buildup to finals as completely unfair, with Andy Moran quick to call it out after their semi-final win.

As for Brolly’s comments, Lee Keegan had little time for them.

Writing for RTÉ, the Mayo legend called out the man who now also lives in the county, reminding readers of the Derry native’s track record when it comes to making predictions in big games.

That dismissive attitude seems to be relentless when it comes to Mayo.

I can’t help but think it explains why so many pundits were tipping Louth last week (just the 17 points in the difference in the end, was it?)

Of course the same evening, we were treated to more bulls**t nonsense in the Sunday Independent from a Knockmore resident.

It’s good to see the same man hasn’t lost any confidence after his column earlier this year when he was telling us that Donegal were champions-elect and saying that Jack O’Connor was out of his depth. It’s all pantomime stuff anyway.

A not so subtle dig there.

Can Mayo upset Kerry in All-Ireland final?

Mayo will enter the All-Ireland final as underdogs, with Kerry possessing a stronger panel and better recent pedigree at the highest level.

As a result, it would be no surprise to see Andy Moran’s men come out on the losing side in this fixture. Still, they should not be written off and certainly have the talent to pull off a shock.

It should make for a fascinating encounter.
