A replica of the Santa Maria ship is visiting Drogheda for several days as part of a historical outreach tour.

One of the most famous ships in the world, the Santa Maria led by Christopher Columbus played the main role in the discovery of America.

It first set sail on 3 August 1492 from Huelva in Spain, along with the caravels, the NiƱa and the Pinta.

In October that year it arrived in America.

The construction of the 200-tonne full-scale replica ship was completed in 2018 by the Nao Victoria Foundation.

It carries five sails with a surface of 303sq/m and the standing and running rigging on board consists of about 3km of rope.

While it has modern elements like engine and machine rooms, GPS, radio and radar, it also has an exhibition area to show visitors what the famous vessel was like.

Drogheda Port is one of 30 ports to welcome the Nao Santa Maria this year.

It will be open to the public for tours to explore the interior and learn more about its history from 17-26 July.
