Rathmullan has taken a major step towards becoming one of Ireland’s leading boutique cruise destinations.
Rathmullan The Way Forward CLG has appointed Runda Hospitality & Tourism Solutions to develop a Small Cruise Ship Strategy for the seaside village.
The project, supported by BIM funding through the FLAG North Coastal Communities Development Scheme, will explore how Rathmullan could attract smaller expedition and boutique cruise vessels to Lough Swilly.
The strategy will not focus on the giant cruise liners seen at larger ports such as Killybegs. Instead, it will examine whether Rathmullan could welcome smaller, high-value vessels whose passengers are seeking authentic destinations, local experiences and closer engagement with communities.
The ambition is to develop a low-volume and environmentally responsible cruise offering that complements village life while providing a boost for local businesses.
The study will build on Rathmullan’s natural harbour and the significant multi-million-euro investment in the town’s pier.
Passengers arriving in Rathmullan can access a wide range of attractions across north Donegal, including Fanad Lighthouse, Knockalla Drive, Portsalon, Rosapenna Golf Club, the Great Pollet Sea Arch and the area’s long golden beaches.
The village could also serve as a base for trips around Lough Swilly, the Fanad Peninsula and Glenveagh National Park, while its connection to the Flight of the Earls would add a strong heritage element.

The latest move follows calls earlier this year for Donegal County Council to begin promoting Rathmullan Pier directly to cruise ship operators.
In March, Cllr Pauric McGarvey asked the council’s Tourism Department to consider seeking expressions of interest from companies interested in using the pier as a gateway to the Fanad Peninsula and wider Donegal region.
Rathmullan The Way Forward was established in 2018 and has secured more than €1.3 million for projects aimed at developing the village as a sustainable place to live, visit and do business.
Mick McGlynn, Director of Rathmullan The Way Forward, said: “This strategy is about carefully exploring an opportunity that aligns with Rathmullan’s strengths. We want to understand how boutique cruise tourism can support local businesses, extend the tourism season and create lasting economic benefits while protecting the qualities that make Rathmullan such a special place to live and visit.”
Runda Hospitality & Tourism Solutions will now consult with local businesses, tourism providers, community groups and public agencies.
Sheila Russell, Runda Hospitality & Tourism Solutions, said: “Across Europe and the North Atlantic, there is growing demand from expedition cruise operators for smaller ports that can offer authentic experiences and a strong sense of place.
“Rathmullan has many of the characteristics these operators are looking for: a deep natural harbour, upgraded marine infrastructure, exceptional scenery, fascinating heritage and a welcoming community. Our role is to develop an evidence-based strategy that evaluates the opportunity and provides a clear road map for sustainable development.”
