A man who has been charged with four counts of rape in Co Donegal has been further remanded in custody.

The man, who is in his 20s and cannot be named at this stage of proceedings due to the nature of the charges, appeared before Letterkenny District Court.

The man was before Judge Emile Daly via video link from prison and faces a total of nine charges.

He has been charged in relation to offences alleged to have occurred in Donegal in 2024.

He faces four counts of rape. Some of the rape charges are contrary to section 4 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act 1990 and the others are contrary to section 48 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act 1981, as amended by section 21 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act 1990.

The man is also accused of three counts of sending sexually explicit material to a child under the age of 17. Those charges are contrary to section 8 (2) of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, 2017.

He is charged with one count of sexual assault and faces a further charge of sexual exploitation.

Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that a book of evidence is not yet ready in the matter.

The court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that the man go forward for trial on indictment to the Central Criminal Court. There is also the option of the accused going forward on a signed plea.

Disclosure is to be given to the man’s solicitor, Mr Donough Cleary, by the end of July, with the man due to appear again before the court in August.
