A man has been arrested by gardaí after a public order incident in Co Louth.

The incident occurred at approximately 9.30pm at an open carpark in Dundalk where the man was alleged to be armed with a knife.

Gardaí said a “less lethal force option” was deployed during the incident which involved uniformed gardaí working alongside members of the Armed Support Unit.

In a statement, gardaí said they had engaged with the man to try and de-escalate the situation.

Gardaí said the man did not comply and that “gardaí from the Armed Support Unit discharged one round from a 40mm less-lethal force option.”

“As a result of this intervention, gardaí were able to disarm the male,” the statement added.

The man has been arrested and is currently being detained at Dundalk Garda Station.
