The second most senior garda officer who has overall responsibility for organised crime, terrorism, investigations and the An Garda Síochána’s specialist units is to retire.
Shawna Coxon, who is a native of Canada, took up the position of deputy garda commissioner five years ago when Drew Harris was commissioner.
She informed Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly today of her intention to retire in November this year after 30 years policing in Ireland and Canada.
In a statement Commissioner Kelly thanked her for her service and wished her well in the future.
He said that she had provided exemplary service and was highly regarded internationally for her professionalism, dedication and policing expertise.
Ms Coxon who has a PHD in criminal law, a masters in criminology and a degree in psychology previously served in a variety of roles in the Toronto police service.
