Wicklow’s loss could be Donegal’s gain as American packaging company ProAmpac announced it is reviewing its operation in the Garden County.

The company, which makes flexible packaging, confirmed it has entered a formal consultation process, with production transferred to a sister site in Gaoth Dobhair.

The move effects 39 workers at its Wicklow plant in Carnew.

The company’s Goath Dobhair operations employs in the region of 300 jobs at its Donegal operation.

It is not known yet if the move will create new jobs at the company’s current plant in West Donegal.

ProAmpac has indicated redeployment opportunities may be available at its Donegal site, though local representatives in Wicklow have questioned how realistic that option is for a workforce based on the other side of the country.

In a letter to customers ProAmpac Europe President Francis Minogue confirmed the company had entered a consultation process regarding the Carnew facility, including a proposal to relocate its manufacturing assets to other sites within the group.

The letter states that any receiving facility would be an established ProAmpac location “with proven operational excellence, an experienced and resilient workforce and reliable capabilities.”

Workers at the Wicklow plant were informed of the company’s plans this week and have now entered a 30-day formal consultation period.
