Donegal reporter Barry Gallagher has been assigned RTÉ’s new journalist covering news from Cork, Kerry and the wider Southern region.
Working alongside RTÉ News’ Southern Editor Paschal Sheehy, Barry will be reporting for RTÉ News’ online, social, television and radio news programmes.
Barry joined RTÉ News in 2023, originally as a presenter of news2day for two years.
He has gone on to work as a multi-media journalist reporting across television, radio and online news including RTÉ’s Six One News, Nine O’Clock News, and most recently with RTÉ’s Morning Ireland team.
He has reported on Storm Chandra and the Enniscorthy Floods, the 2024 Olympic Games, Electric Picnic, the 2024 and 2025 All Ireland Hurling Finals, and Jessie Buckley’s historic Oscar success.
Originally from Gartan, he moved to Dublin for his undergraduate degree in journalism at DCU in 2019. And after graduating in May 2022, Barry began working as a reporter with national media outlet The Irish Sun, cementing his love for all things news. There he worked on a variety of different stories ranging from breaking news and sport to investigative features, covering events across the country and beyond.
A former player with Termon GAA Club, Barry attended St Eunan’s College in Letterkenny.
Barry grew up on a farm, understanding the important role of regional news and reporting on issues affecting people across their region.

Barry will be based in RTÉ Cork and begin his new assignment this August.
