An increasing number of advertising signs, and even a camper van for sale, have raised concerns about driver distraction at the notorious Kilross Junction.

The pictures above were sent to us by a concerned reader who believes they have become a major distraction at the dangerous intersection on the main Letterkenny to Ballybofey road.

Of the ten signs present there today, four were for businesses, two for a festival, three for local charities/sporting organisations while another displayed a religious message. A campervan, with a ‘for sale’ sign, was also parked in the adjoining council yard.

We asked Donegal County Council for a comment.

According to the council’s own rules, however, you need their approval to place advertising signs on or beside a public road. Approval is usually through a licence or planning permission.

“Unauthorised advertising signs can be unsightly and may also create a hazard for road users, particularly on approach roads to towns and villages,” their website states.

“Our policy is to keep public roads clear of unauthorised advertising signs, in line with Section 71 of the Roads Act 1993.”

Temporary signs for non-commercial local events may be allowed, however, as long as they meet the relevant conditions and do not affect road safety.

“Temporary signs for local commercial events may also be allowed, subject to conditions such as size, location and how long the sign is displayed.”

The council, however, has been proactive on roadside advertising in recent months.
