Progress on the highly anticipated M28 linking Cork and Ringaskiddy is moving fast, and it seems every few weeks there are some big updates as the project drives on. The new €456million motorway is taking shape south of the city – the biggest Cork transport project in decades – due for completion by summer 2028.
The M28 project team have shared their latest updates, sharing that motorists will see some significant changes soon, including a new road to open next week.
Here are 8 of the biggest recent updates, including a “major milestone” bridge installation:
Ringaskiddy Relief Road – expected to open to the public next week. This new protected route (no pedestrians or cyclists) will provide improved connectivity to Ringaskiddy.Maryborough Hill – A major milestone this with the full closure of the N28 to allow the installation of the temporary bridge. The existing overbridge will be demolished and replaced.Bloomfield – a new layout at the Rochestown exit has been in place since Thursday to facilitate works on retaining walls. An overhead sign will be removed next week.Rochestown Road – Excavation works are due to commence in the coming weeks and will have an impact on traffic travelling towards Douglas. The Rochestown off-ramp remains reduced to a single lane to facilitate adjacent construction works.Mount Oval – Excavation works for the new slip road continue. Hoarding works in the Edgewood area are currently scheduled to commence after the August Bank Holiday weekend.Carrs Hill Interchange – The Ballybrack Cycleway has progressed well and a box culvert is nearing completion.Shannonpark – The new link road is progressing steadily. Construction of the link road connection to the new roundabout has started and surfacing works on the new section of road towards Carrigaline will start shortlyRock Road – Excavation works for the new overbridge are expected to commence shortly, with foundation works for the structure due to begin in the coming weeks.A number of traffic management measures remain in place to support ongoing construction activities, including: the N28 closed until Monday morning with traffic diversions around Maryborough Hill, and a temporary closure of the R855/R609 (Carrigaline Road) to N28 on-slip is from 8pm on 30th July until 5am on 5th August.
