Hundreds of home buyers have had to repay tax relief they claimed under the Help to Buy Scheme.

In some cases, buyers may have failed to disclose they owned a property in another country, while others may have sold their home within five years, which is against the scheme’s terms, according to the Irish Independent.

More than 2 million euro has been recovered from over 200 buyers since the start of last year.

The Help to Buy Scheme gives eligible first-time buyers a tax refund of up to 30,000 euro, or 10% of the property’s price, towards the deposit on a new-build home costing 500,000 euro or less.
