Limerick rapper Strange Boy has released his new single, ‘Foul,’ a collaboration with fellow Limerick artist Rebel Phoenix that offers an honest look at growing up in the city.
Strange Boy has made a name for himself in Irish music by fusing hard-hitting hip-hop with traditional Irish instruments.
He sees his craft as a modern extension of the ancient Irish seanchaí, the traditional storyteller.
“Rap, to me, is storytelling in a modern tongue,” Strange Boy said. “The same fire, different form.”
Raised in Caherdavin, Strange Boy writes from the place he knows best. On ‘Foul,’ he reflects on childhood hardship, navigating poverty, instability, and violence, and how those early environments shape a person before they even have the power to understand them.
The track explores the loss of childhood innocence and looks at how working-class communities across Limerick and Ireland are often reduced to negative headlines, while the real human stories behind them are ignored.
“You have no power to stop what’s happening, so you just become a product of your own time and circumstance,” Strange Boy said.
Musically, the track brings together producer Enda Gallery’s production with performances from Dermot Sheedy (bodhrán), Conor Crimmins (flute), Sean O’Meara (guitar) and Ted Kelly (banjo), creating a sound that sits comfortably between Irish traditional music and modern hip hop.
The four-minute explicit single is available to stream and download now across all major music platforms ahead of the release of ‘Say Nothin’ this autumn.
