An off-duty garda was killed in a single-vehicle car crash in Co Clare yesterday evening.
The collision happened shortly after 5.30pm yesterday on the R466 outside the village of Broadford.
GardaĆ and emergency services attended the scene, where the passenger of the car, was pronounced dead.
The garda, a man in his 50s, was based at a station in Limerick city.
The driver, also aged in his 50s, was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) with serious injuries.
The deceased’s body was removed to the mortuary at UHL where a post-mortem examination will take place.
The road remains closed this morning as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carry out a technical examination of the scene. Local diversions are in place.
Garda investigations into the circumstances of the fatal collision are ongoing.
GardaĆ are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.
They would particularly like to speak to road users who were travelling on the R466 at Gortnaglogh around the time of the crash and may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings.
