Sharlene Mawdsley has been named in a 20-person Irish squad for the upcoming European Athletics Championships in Birmingham (10-16 August), despite injury concerns from the recent National Championships.

Mawdsley, along with the likes of Rhasidat Adeleke, Kate O’Connor and Mark English will spearhead medal hopes, remains a doubt after pulling up in the women’s 200m final in Santry at the weekend, but has been included for the individual women’s 400m and alongside Adeleke in the women’s 4x400m relay.

Olympic finalist Adeleke, who has struggled for form this season, qualified for the the 200m on Saturday.

World silver medalist O’Connor, currently in action at the Commonwealth Games, is a strong medal prospect having medalled at the European indoors, World indoors and World Championships in 2025.

English, a two-time European bronze medallist, will be joined by Cian McPhillips in the 800m.

Fellow national record holder Andrew Coscoran is in the men’s 1500m while European indoor 3000m champion Sarah Healy is set to double up in the women’s 1500m and 5000m. Healy is joined in the 1500m by Sophie O’Sullivan, who produced an eye-catching performance at the weekend to reclaim the women’s national 1500m title, storming to victory in a championship record of 4:05.62, eclipsing the time set met her mother Sonia.

In the sprints, Israel Olatunde and Bori Akinola will compete in the men’s 100m, while Lauren Roy and Sarah Lavin are selected for the women’s 200m and women’s 100m hurdles respectively.

Darragh McElhinney and Nick Griggs will compete in the men’s 5000m.

Five-time Olympian Fionnuala McCormack flies the flag in the women’s marathon, while there will be an Irish men’s team for the event as national champion David McGlynn will be joined by Ryan Creech and Paul O’Donnell.

Nicola Tuthill leads the charge in the field events as the 22-year-old competes in the women’s hammer throw.

The squad announcement confirms the selection of athletes with ‘A’ standards, while athletes qualifying via ranking position and having achieved the Athletics Ireland ‘B’ Standard will be confirmed after European Athletics produces its final list of qualifiers on 30 July.
