Cork City moved closer to the First Division title by holding off an Athlone Town fightback to increase their lead to 20 points with 10 games to play.
In front of 1,771 fans at a rain-soaked Turner’s Cross, the hosts’ Golden Boot contenders did the damage in the first half. Ruairí Keating’s brace took his tally to 13 league goals, while Hans Mpongo netted his 14th.
Peter Grogan’s double brought it back to 3-2 and took his running total to six for the season, but Athlone, who slip to ninth, couldn’t find a leveller in the final half-hour.
The pre-match transfer talk concerned Donal O’Connor, City’s 18-year-old centre-back who is set for a cross-channel move to Brentford. With Greg Bolger also absent through suspension, Niall O’Keeffe came into the side.
Four Athlone changes saw Joshua Farnham and a new front-three of William Smith, Grogan, and Gradi Lomboto introduced.
Amid torrential downpours, the visitors shot themselves in the foot after three minutes. As they attempted to pass out against an aggressive City press, Brendan Clarke gave the ball straight to Darragh Crowley. With three attackers against one defender in the box, Cillian Murphy squared for Keating to tap home.

Mpongo, the only player ahead of Keating in the Golden Boot race, was also off the mark inside a dozen minutes. Niall O’Keeffe punished more loose passing to feed the Dutchman, who wheeled right before sending a ricocheted shot to the net.
Once Athlone got some possession in attack, they began to find openings. The influential Lomboto hit the post before Fiacre Kelleher deflected his next effort behind.
In the 32nd minute, Athlone again paid the price for losing possession close to their own goal. Once more, teenager Murphy gave the assist for Keating to tuck home.
Adding in his FAI Cup strike, that’s 13 goals in 11 games since the end of May for the 31-year-old Mayoman.
City have been shaky at the back in recent weeks and they were bailed out by a fine Conor Brann save from Grogan. But they couldn’t clear for Athlone’s 43rd-minute breakthrough. Lomboto’s volley was spilled by Brann, with Grogan following up to finish.
Athlone threatened to make a match of it on the resumption as Aaron Connolly curled a free-kick narrowly wide. From another free-kick, City were caught napping as James Crawford sent Jonathan Kehir clear, only for Brann to produce a one-on-one stop. The keeper was then called into action to save a Crawford free.
City switched to four at the back and introduced Seani Maguire in a playmaking role. Their plans were soon picked apart from Crawford’s corner as Grogan was left completely unmarked to plant a header to the net. With a half-hour to go, it was back to 3-2.
Cillian Tollett’s first act upon coming on was to test Brann, but that was as close as Athlone would come.

Kerry FC moved into the play-off spots with a 3-0 win over Munster rivals Cobh Ramblers in front of a crowd which included Roy Keane at Mounthawk Park this evening.
It was a sobering evening for Keane’s old club as Cobh were dispatched by the hosts, who scored all three of their goals in the opening half, Cian Murphy nabbing a brace while Sean McGrath added the other.
The result sees the hosts leapfrog Cobh and move into fifth spot in the First Division table.

UCD suffered a shock defeat at home to struggling Treaty United, after goalkeeper Dara Kavanagh’s unfortunate own goal in the closing 15 minutes.
Mikey McCullagh had given the students the lead shortly after half-time but Cian Curtis struck back on 66 minutes for Treaty, who, after a terrible start to the season, had claimed 10 points from their previous five league games.
On 77 minutes, a cross was curled in, Ben Feeney powered a header goalwards, it rebounded off the crossbar but hit keeper Kavanagh on the back of the head and wound up in the net.
Bray Wanderers remain level with UCD on 40 points after suffering their own 2-1 reversal against Wexford FC in Ferrycarrig Park.
Mikie Rowe struck twice for the hosts in the opening 25 minutes, though Ifunanyachi Achara pulled one back just before the half hour. The home side, currently just outside the play-off spots, managed to cling on despite Ryan Ritchie’s late sending off.
Longford Town smashed bottom-placed Finn Harps 5-0 to claim their fourth win in five games, maintaining their hold on four points and moving just three points behind both UCD and Bray Wanderers.
The Midlanders led 1-0 at the break through a goal from Dean Williams shortly after the hour hour mark but the visitors were fatally weakened after Bridel Bosakani was sent off just before the break.

The floodgates opened after half-time, Daniel McKenna and Darragh Murtagh both scoring within 10 minutes of the resumption. Alex O’Brien made it 4-0 in the closing stages before Harps were reduced to nine men when Shaunie Bradley was banished.
James Bailey completed the rout against the severely depleted away side in the final minute of normal time.
