Thousands have been raised to support Limerick boxer Lee Reeves and his family after he was hospitalised following a boxing match in Dublin.
A GoFundMe set up to help cover the 31-year-old’s recovery and medical costs has raised over €23k in just a few hours. Campaign organiser and boxing coach, Johnathan O’Brien, said the funds will also go towards helping the boxer’s family with expenses as they support him in hospital.
The Limerick man was hospitalised following a knockout defeat in the tenth round of his match against Gary Cully at the 3Arena on Saturday. His opponent landed the stoppage 53 seconds into the tenth and final round of their super-lightweight bout, and Lee was taken from the ring on a stretcher.
In a statement on Sunday, Queensberry Promotions said that Reeves was in a “critical but stable” condition. They added: “We will know more in the coming days, and our thoughts and prayers remain with Lee and his family.”
Since the match, there has been huge outpouring of support and well wishes for the Limerick boxer with his recovery online. Sharing the GoFundMe on social media, Mr. O’Brien said Lee is a “genuine, good guy” who has done a lot for charity and is well-respected in the boxing world. He asked the public to keep Lee and his family in their thoughts over the coming days.
Fight promoter Frank Warren has said he is in touch with the Limerick man’s team for updates on his condition. He shared in a statement over the weekend: “All our thoughts and prayers are with Lee Reeves and his family at this time as he remains in hospital.”
Cully also sent his best wishes to his fellow southpaw after Saturday’s bout.
“My prayers and thoughts are with Lee Reeves, hopefully he’s okay,” said the Naas man. “He came in there as a big underdog after fighting relatively at a lower level up until now, but he really showed that he can operate at a higher level. Huge credit to him.”
