Former Labour Party TD and Lord Mayor of Dublin Michael Conaghan has died at the age of 81.
Mr Conaghan was elected to the Dáil for Dublin South Central in 2011, serving one term before stepping away prior to the 2016 General Election.
The Donegal native took the second of two Labour seats in the constituency alongside Eric Byrne on a memorable day for the party at the 2011 election.
He served 20 years as a councillor on Dublin City Council after his election in 1991, topping the poll on three occasions in the Ballyfermot ward.
The former teacher was elected as Lord Mayor in 2004.
Paying tribute, Labour leader Ivana Bacik said: “As a member of the first Oireachtas all-party group on commemorations, one of Michael’s greatest political achievements was securing the preservation of Richmond Barracks as a cultural and educational hub for the people of the South-West Inner City and beyond, in the run up to the centenary of 1916.”
He was survived by his wife Marian and his daughters Heidi and Eve.
