A huge hit in a number of countries, ‘I Should Have Known Better’ was followed by ‘I Sleep Alone at Night’. This single failed to replicate the commercial success of its predecessor. Looking back, Jim Diamond suggests that the choice of follow-up single may have played a role. The A&R executive who had championed him at A&M Records left the company just as ‘I Should Have Known Better’ reached number one, leaving no one to guide key decisions about his career at the label.
