There are signals within the Government that the timetable for restoring excise cuts on fuel may have to be revisited.
The coalition had agreed a plan to reverse excise cuts on petrol and diesel in four phases between September and December.
But prices at the pumps have remained high, casting doubt on that timetable.
Figures from AA Ireland show the average cost of a litre of diesel has risen by 19 cent to €1.92 in the past month, with petrol rising by 9 cent per litre to €1.84 over the same period.
There is a view in the Government that if prices remain elevated, the schedule will have to be revisited.
The first of the price rises could still go ahead on 1 September as the Dáil will be in recess.
But the timetable for later cuts could change.

A Government spokesperson stressed that no decision has yet been made, but he said that the coalition is monitoring the situation closely and reserves the right to adjust its response as required.
Both the Irish Farmers’ Association and the Irish Road Haulage Association have called on the Government to postpone the increases.
On 1 September, petrol is due to rise by 9c per litre, while diesel is set to rise by 10c per litre due to the partial reversal of excise cuts and reductions in the National Oil Reserves Agency (NORA) levy.
