Scottie Scheffler closed in on just his second win of the season at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, as Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy suffered another stagnant afternoon.
The world number one carded a third round of two-under-par 68 to take a two shot head into the final day’s play, sitting on 13-under. The FedEx Cup leader failed to find the same momentum as his Friday 61, mixing four birdies with two bogeys.
He will go off in the final group on Sunday alongside Ryder Cup teammate Sam Burns who fired his own low round of the week, an eight-under-par 62, with Sungjae Im also in a tie for second place on 11-under.
It would prove to be a costly and frustrating day for both Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy however, who both carded two-over-par rounds to slip further back.
A double bogey on 18, for the second time in the tournament, added a further blip to McIlroy’s scorecard as he enters Sunday on six-over for the tournament.
Lowry got off to a bright start on Saturday with birdies on the third and fifth holes. He failed to keep the momentum going however shooting three bogeys and a double on the way in with just a sole birdie in his final ten holes.
The Offaly man sits at three-over-par for the tournament, likely spelling the end to his PGA Tour season as he is unlikely to accrue enough points to qualify for the next FedEx Cup Playoff event.
