With the inter-county GAA season now in the rearview mirror, club action around the country will take centre stage over the coming weeks. There are no shortage of hugely entertaining county championships each season, with the Galway senior grade likely to be at the very top of the list.
There are some very strong teams playing in the Connacht county at the minute. Salthill/Knocknacarra possess one of the best forward lines in the country, while Corofin remain a fantastic side. Then you have defending champions Moycullen, who have added to their ranks with a couple of intriguing transfers.
One of the other big names in the county would suffer a surprising loss on Sunday, with Galway star Damien Comer playing a central role in the game.
Damien Comer Fires Club To Shock Galway Championship Win
Damien Comer has had his struggles with injury in 2026, but he seems well primed to make a big impact for Annaghdown in this year’s Galway championship.
The 32-year old would have a quiet start to the competition, going scoreless in a 1-17 to 0-20 draw with St James’. However, he was very much at the centre of the action in the game against Tuam Stars.
Comer would score a brilliant goal inside the opening five minutes, fielding a high ball before beating his man and producing a smart finish beyond the Tuam goalkeeper.

With the contest in the balance in the final few minutes, Comer went on to play a decisive role in the result.
His goal with five minutes left to play gave Annaghdown a valuable lead.

They would hold on to seal a 2-14 to 1-16 win.
Annaghdown primed for deep Galway championship run
This was a huge result for Annaghdown, with Tuam Stars always among the most fancied teams in Galway each season. Tuam had a comfortable win over Oughterard in their championship opener and will be aiming to make a deep run in the competition over the coming weeks.
Annaghdown struggled in last year’s championship, losing all three of their group games. That included a 3-10 to 0-6 loss to Tuam, with this result quite the turnaround 12 months on. The club would go on to beat St Michael’s in a relegation semi-final to retain their senior status.
Having come away with three points from their two group games so far, Annaghdown will be aiming for a much better campaign this time around. Oughterard would beat St James in the other game in this group over the weekend, meaning that a win for Comer’s side in their final fixture would ensure they top the group and guarantee a place in the quarter-finals.
