Cameron Diaz will be staying firmly in her action era after coming out of her decade-long acting hiatus, with the star set to appear alongside Ed O’Neill and Danielle Brooks in Netflix’s Bad Day later this year.
Diaz, who will also reprise the role of Fiona in the highly-anticipated Shrek 5, stars as a single mum who fights to keep one little promise to her daughter on the “absolute worst day of her life” (via Tudum).
With a stacked cast also featuring Sam Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Mark Duplass, John Higgins, Jessica Belkin, Rhenzy Feliz, PJ Byrne and Retta, the action comedy is set to debut on Netflix on 11 December.

The release may still be a little while away, but the streamer has just released some first-look images to tide fans over. The first stills depict Diaz’s very concerned character on a bus, which is being driven recklessly by O’Neill.
There’s also an image of Brooks in character as a police detective, which suggests that the protagonist’s shenanigans will likely cause some trouble with the law. Either way, we’ll have to wait to find out!
Bad Day is directed by Jake Szymanski, who is best known for Jury Duty, while the screenplay is written by Laura Solon. She also serves as an executive producer alongside Mark Moran, while Beau Bauman is producing as part of Good One Productions.
Bauman also produced Back in Action, another Netflix film which served as Diaz’s comeback after 11 years away. Co-starring Andrew Scott and Jamie Foxx, the film was generally liked by viewers, amassing more than 46 million views in its first three days.

The film follows married couple and retired CIA agents Emily and Matt, played by Diaz and Foxx respectively, who are roped back into espionage when their cover is blown. Naturally, they don’t find returning to their roots too easy.
Diaz also starred alongside Keanu Reeves and Drew Barrymore in Outcome, the Apple TV comedy film from writer-director Jonah Hill. She has also been cast in an upcoming rom-com, with Stephen Merchant set to write, direct and star in the untitled film.
Bad Day is released on Netflix on 11 December.
