A memorial walk will take place later today on the 30th anniversary of the disappearance of Fiona Pender.
Relatives and friends of the 25-year-old will take part in the annual walk which begins at ‘Fiona’s Way’ on the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly.
Ms Pender was last seen at her flat on Church Street in the town on 23 August, 1996.
She was seven months pregnant at the time of her disappearance.
While gardaí long suspected Ms Pender had been murdered and had a chief suspect, the case was, until last year, a missing persons investigation.
The suspect is from the midlands and has emigrated from Ireland.
Ms Pender is believed to have been murdered and her body buried although no remains have been recovered.
Five arrests were made in the case in 1997, but no one has ever been charged.
Over the years, Ms Pender’s mother Josephine campaigned tirelessly for a breakthrough in the case, continuously appealing for information to find her daughter.
She died in 2017.
Further searches to find the remains of Fiona Pender were carried out last year
Fiona’s father Sean died in 2000 and her brother Mark died in a motorcycle crash 14 months before her disappearance.
In May last year searches took place at bogland in Killeigh, Co Offaly, and in the Slieve Bloom mountains, close to Clonaslee in Co Laois.
Ms Pender’s relatives and friends have said that despite the passage of time, people in Tullamore will always remember her and hope always remains that her body will be recovered.
Gardaí have again appealed for information and are urging anyone who has any information and who has not previously spoken to gardaí, to contact them.
They also are appealing to anyone who may have previously come forward and who felt they could not provide gardaí with all the information, to contact the investigation team again.
As part of the investigation, gardaí say they have collated thousands of documents and reports and taken over 300 statements of evidence.
They say the investigation is ongoing and are still following inquiries all the time.
