Day three at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam saw Fintan McCarthy and Fiona Murtagh secure their semi-finals spots in their respective single sculls events.
McCarthy, who already has five world medals to his name in the double sculls, finished second in his heat, posting a time of 7:20.69, which was a little over four seconds behind heat winner Samuel Melvin.
The Skibbereen clubman and two-time Olympic gold medallist has secured one of the automatic berths in Saturday’s semis.
The same is true of Fiona Murtagh in the women’s single sculls
Competing in heat 5, Murtagh, the reigning gold medallist in the event, posted a time of 8:01.18 in the Netherlands to finish second, just behind South Africa’s Paige Badenhorst. That was good enough to guarantee her a place in the semi-final races, which will also take place on Saturday.
Earlier this summer, the Galwegian took home a silver medal in the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne.
Imogen Magner and Natalie Long came home fifth in their women’s pair semi-final, clocking 7:41.74.
In the men’s pair C final, Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney finished second in a time of 06:54.02
