From next week, the fixed payment litter and dog fouling fine around County Galway will increase sharply – from €150 to €250.
The increase follows a change to Section 28 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997, provided for through the commencement of Section 26 of the Circular Economy and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2026 nationally.
The Council is using the opportunity to remind people to dispose of litter responsibly and to help keep Galway’s, beaches, towns, villages and public spaces litter free.
Mary McGann, Admin Officer at the Environment Department says the increase in fines is part of a wider review of its litter management plan.
“The primary reason they’re being introduced is to protect our public places – our towns, our villages, our parks and our green spaces from littering, and to act as a stronger deterrent for those who do litter and encourage more responsible behaviour”, she says.
The litter management plan has a number of strands, and Mary McGann says that will come down to implementation from two sides.
“There’s stronger enforcement through community wardens and issuing of fines, but they’re also an educational and awareness aspect, where you’re trying to change behavior through different campaigns.”
