Aaron Hill’s wait to reach a ranking event semi-final is set to go on after an agonising deciding frame defeat to Jak Jones in the British Open quarter-finals tonight.
This was the fourth ranking event quarter-final of Hill’s career, but it’s now four defeats after his comeback fell short in a 5-4 loss.
Jones, who inflicted one of those previous last eight defeats at the 2025 English Open, knocked in a break of 70 in the decider to send the Cork man out.
Hill had led at 2-1 after back-to-back breaks of 63 and 67 but Jones then began to take control, winning the next three frames to leave himself on the brink of going through.
The 24-year-old, who is at a career high of 38 in the world rankings, dug deep to win the next two, keeping his opponent scoreless, and knocking in his highest break of the match – a 78 – to force a dcider.
And Hill got in first in the last frame but Jones did what he had to with the break of 70, finishing off the match with one final visit.
The Welshman will face Judd Trump in the last four after he saw off new world number one Zhao Xintong 5-1, with Liam Highfield to face in-form Mark Selby on the other side of the draw.
