A new eight-episode series has come out of nowhere to rise to the top of the heap on steaming, even beating back the likes of a Jason Statham-hit action thriller in the rankings. Premiering on July 31, the new show blends all the seedy elements of Britain’s criminal underbelly that are on display in almost every Guy Ritchie movie with a little Rocky Balboa thrown in for good measure. Thus far, the formula seems to be working, as the new series has wasted no time skyrocketing to #1.
Guy Ritchie Meets ‘Rocky’ In Streaming’s Newest Hit
Created by Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan, Marlon Smith, Damione Macedon and Raphael Jackson Jr., Fightland stars Howard Charles as Maduka “Duke” Kilroy, a heavyweight boxing champion whose life fell apart when his brother was murdered on the night he won the title. Eventually returning to London after a lengthy stint in prison, Duke has nothing but revenge on his mind, targeting the people he believes responsible for his brother’s death.
First on the list is Kingsley Marshall (Nicholas Pinnock), Duke’s former promoter who’s since become a powerful figure in London’s criminal underworld. Digging deeper into his brother’s death, Duke’s quest for vengeance puts him smack-dab in the middle of a growing rivalry. Using the toughness and discipline he developed as a boxer, he puts his skills to good use in order to survive a very different kind of fight.
Also starring Deborah Ayorinde, Charles Babalola, Anita-Joy Uwajeh, and Tahirah Sharif, Fightland is an interesting entry in the crime thriller genre. It’s essentially a revenge story wrapped inside a London gangster drama, but boxing plays an important role in the series, as it informs Duke’s choices throughout. You could call it a much darker version of Snatch mixed with a little Gangs of London, but either way, it’s certainly a story that’s managed to captivate viewers since its debut, as is evident by its place on the streaming charts.

Currently, there are six episodes of Fightland streaming exclusively on Starz, with two more still to go in the show’s first season. Thus far, the series has proven to be a successful hit for the network, as, per Flix Patrol, it now sits atop the list of Top 10 TV Shows.
Fightland has become such a success that it’s even managed to take down Jason Statham’s Shelter in the overall rankings. The hit action thriller that released earlier this year has been a top player since its arrival on streaming, but after spending a considerable amount of time in first place, it’s since fallen down to #3 behind the new hit, Michael, and Will Smith’s 2015 heist thriller, Focus.
Serving as the first internationally produced series through Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s G-Unit Film & Television, there’s been no word yet on whether Fightland will receive a second season. That being said, the show is a Starz-owned IP, and if history is any indication of things, we know it’s a network that likes to turn its original programming into recurring franchises whenever it can, so based on its early success, we’d say the future definitely looks bright for Fightland.
