Jim McGuinness has been given a one-year extension to his term as the Donegal senior football team manager.
McGuinness returned as the Donegal manager in August 2023 on a three-year term with the option of a fourth.
Donegal lost out to Down in the defence of their Ulster SFC crown this year while they exited the All-Ireland SFC after a round 3 loss to Dublin at Croke Park. Donegal also suffered defeat to Cork in Ballybofey during the All-Ireland SFC.
There had been suggestions that McGuinness would seek a longer term at the helm now, but a meeting tonight of the County Committee in Convoy has ratified the Glenties native for a one-year term while Mickey McCann will continue as the Donegal hurling manager for another two years.
A short statement issued by the Donegal County Board said: “Following a meeting of the County Committee, CLG Dhún na nGall confirm the appointment of Michael McCann as Senior Hurling manager for a two year term and Jim McGuinness as Senior Football Manager for a one year term.”
Burt native McCann has been in charge of the hurlers since October 2017. During that spell, Donegal won the Nicky Rickard Cup in 2018 and 2020 and he will now head into his 10th year as the county hurling boss.
McGuinness guided Donegal to the All-Ireland SFC in 2012 as well as winning three Ulster titles during his first spell in charge.
After pursuing a career in soccer, which included a short spell as Charlotte Independence manager, McGuinness was reinstalled as the Donegal boss in the autumn of 2023.
