Emmerdale spoilers follow from Wednesday’s episode (9 September), which is available to watch now on ITVX and YouTube but hasn’t yet aired on ITV1.
Sarah Sugden makes a life-changing decision on Emmerdale today following the devastating reveal earlier this week, where Charity Dingle finally confirmed that Leyla wasn’t Sarah’s biological daughter.
A long-running storyline from the ITV soap has been the secret of Leyla’s parentage, with Sarah and Jacob believing that Charity was their surrogate. In fact, Leyla is the result of a one-night stand between Charity and Ross Barton.

After months of secrets, Sarah finally discovered the truth during Monday’s (7 September) episode, with today’s instalment picking up as Jacob finds his distraught wife sitting quietly.
He thinks her sullen mood is caused by Charity’s potential incarceration, though Sarah refrains from telling him the truth for a moment. She soon heads to Charity, with Mack, Chas and Ross also being there.
Though Charity attempts to repair their bond, Sarah isn’t interested in listening, and promptly orders everyone to pay attention. Though she says that Charity means “nothing” to her from now on, she says that she will keep up appearances.
This is mainly done to prevent Jacob and Leyla from ever finding out the truth, though Mack questions if this is the best plan. Sarah is unmoved, however, and maintains that the terse atmosphere will be their “new normal”.
She then makes a bold decision as she heads to the police station, as she drops Charity right in it! Sarah had accidentally killed Dr Caitlin Todd, with Charity taking the blame for the killing, but a twist occurs.
As Charity is called in for questioning again, DS Thea Ramsden reveals that Sarah has retracted her witness statement. Sarah is now claiming that her previous statement was made under coercion from Charity, and that Charity “wanted [Todd] dead”. With all the evidence pointing towards her, Charity is arrested on suspicion of murder.

Jacob eventually catches wind of this, and Sarah explains that the development is due to her own actions. She says that she was forced into giving the previous statement, and Jacob supports her.
As he remarks that Charity will have to “live with the consequences”, the beloved character is taken to a prison cell. And with Sarah in bullish mood, she may not be getting out anytime soon.
