Emmerdale’s Joe Tate spirals next week and bans Dawn Fletcher’s kids from her funeral, as he plots to avenge her death!
Committed to punishing Billy for his involvement in the tragedy, Joe demands a private ceremony to lay Dawn to rest. Although he later relents on his funeral plans, it’s clear he’s set on a path of destruction, wanting someone to pay for his beloved fiancée’s death…

“Joe is lost in a storm of vengeance and rage,” says Ned Porteous, who plays the grief-stricken widower. “Dawn was the one thing truly tethering Joe to a life leading toward moral good. He won’t improve for himself, but he would have done it for her. He’s lost his anchor.”
As the crash investigation continues, Kim is heartbroken to hear that Joe wants a completely private funeral for Dawn. And when Billy confronts him, demanding to know why the children aren’t invited, Joe’s cold response leaves Billy bereft.
“Joe’s feeling extremely protective,” explains Ned. “He’s feeling like his way of controlling the situation is to remove the outsiders – to have this whole experience by himself, where nothing more can go wrong.”
With so many locals still harbouring guilt over the crash, upset Billy lashes out, and blames Ruby for the brutal funeral ban. Heading up to Home Farm, Ruby pleads with Joe to change his mind – but her words fall on deaf ears as he continues to accuse her of causing Dawn’s demise…
“Ruby represents the enemy in Joe’s mind,” admits Ned. “Even if she’s speaking sense, he’s too angry to hear any guidance. Even Kim and Graham are making valid points, but it’s the last thing Joe wants to hear. It’s shining a light on his failures.”

After Joe delivers a chilling threat to Ruby, there’s just one person left who could help him see sense. Clemmie appeals to Joe’s better nature, begging him for the chance to say goodbye to her mum for the last time, and eventually he agrees. But it isn’t the turning point his family is hoping for…
Graham is left feeling optimistic after Joe’s change of heart, but soon the grieving dad drops a new bombshell.
He hasn’t done any healing or accepted the tragic situation, but instead he’s plotting the ultimate revenge against those villagers he holds responsible for Dawn’s tragic death – and he wants a big favour from Graham!

“Joe blames anyone who came into contact with Dawn,” reveals Ned. “He’s not thinking rationally and he’s ready to dish out blame to anyone who won’t join in his rage. There’ll be bad blood for a while yet. Joe’s not one to drop a grudge…”
