There are times during his work as a co-commentator at a major track and field championships when David Matthews bites his lip to control the emotion rising inside him. The two-time Olympian has witnessed the great moments in Irish athletics in recent years through his role with RTÉ.
He was trackside in Tokyo last month for Kate O’Connor’s stunning silver in the heptathlon and Cian McPhillips jaw-dropping 800m final fourth at the World Championships.
