New Order keyboard player Gillian Gilbert has announced she is “living with cancer”.
The 65-year-old took to Instagram to clarify it was her who had been diagnosed with the disease and not her husband, the Manchester band’s drummer Stephen Morris, as had previously been reported.
Gilbert said: “Thank you everyone who has reached out following Stephen’s recent interview with Rolling Stone.
“We have both been incredibly touched by all the kind words and well wishes.
“I would like to gently clarify a misunderstanding from the interview, in the course of which comments were misinterpreted leading people to believe that Stephen is seriously ill.
“Thankfully, he is well. It is in fact me, who like many other people, is living with cancer.
“We completely understand how the misunderstanding arose and simply wanted to ensure that the correct information was shared.
“We are enormously grateful for everyone’s kindness and support and would appreciate some privacy as I continue with my treatment.”
In the interview with Rolling Stone, Morris had said: “I’ve got a bit of a health problem at the minute, which precludes leaving the country for any length of time, it’s pretty serious.”
New Order formed in 1980 following the death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis and the subsequent dissolution of the band.
New Order’s best-known songs include Blue Monday, Temptation, and True Faith, while their albums include Power, Corruption and Lies (1983) and Technique (1989).
The band’s current line-up consists of singer Bernard Sumner, Morris, Gilbert, guitarist Phil Cunningham, and bass player Tom Chapman.
New Order are due to perform in South America in November this year.
