Construction is under way for the $525 million, 72-storey residential high-rise tower known as “Atlas Melbourne” in the city’s CBD.
Located on the 2,851 square metre former site of the Australian Federal Police headquarters at 383 La Trobe street, the building will deliver more than 850 apartments with resident amenities.
The dwellings, designed by Cox Architecture and Fender Katsalidis, will comprise of a range of apartments from studios to exclusive penthouses, a media communique has announced.
Resident amenities will include a bar, entertaining and office spaces, and gym and wellness facilities.
On ground level, a gallery arcade will extend Melbourne’s laneway network with pedestrian walkways featuring retail, dining and public art. The pedestrian laneways are also intended to link La Trobe and Little Lonsdale streets.

Previously, the site was slated for a 33-storey office tower designed by Cox Architecture, which was lodged for planning assessment in 2020 and approved by Melbourne City Council in 2021. That scheme replaced an earlier 70-storey hotel and apartment complex proposal designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel and Architectus.
Works have begun on the current scheme following the demolition of the site’s existing 1985 building, with completion of the tower projected for 2030.
