Our body goals change with age, when comfort becomes even more important than toning up. It’s a shift that Trinny Woodall is learning to navigate at 66, and the beauty entrepreneur explains how she’s adjusting her regime to stay strong and safe. It’s working so well, the Trinny London founder tells us she’s actually put knee surgery on hold.
‘I try to avoid lunges, because I think if you have any issues with your knees, lunges are sh*t,’ says Trinny, who was diagnosed with ‘chronic arthritis’ in her knees and told she needed partial replacement of both.
‘So my trainer and I do a lot of other different strengthening for the knees, because a lot of women in their 50s and over get knee and hip issues. You have to be so aware when you’re exercising if you’re putting added pressure on them.’

Trinny has adjusted her workout and supplement regime
Everyone is different, so exercise should be tailored to individual needs and niggles, rather than being a simple one-size-fits all. But Trinny tells us she’s getting great results by increasing her resistance, under the supervision of trainer Nathalie Hayward, and changing her supplement regime.
‘I’m doing heavier weights now,’ the Trinny London founder says. ‘I started with just one and two kilos for a couple of years, because I literally had never done weights before. Then, three years I did up to about eight kilos, but now I’m doing 15 or more for some heavier exercises.’

Trinny swears by her supplement regime
She’s completing her new workout regime with an upgraded supplement regime to support joint health. ‘I’m taking glucosamine with MSM, which is a game-f*cking changer! I was meant to have two knee replacements, and I’ve been taking that religiously with the Bare Biology omega 3. And I’ve noticed no knee pain. It’s been amazing.’
‘Glucosamine is an anti-inflammatory with MSM, and that combination with the Bare Biology omega is good because you’re bringing hydration into where there is nothing left,’ she adds, having been warned that her knees are ‘bone on bone’ due to a lack of protective fluid. ‘The glucosamine for any arthritic knee is fantastic.’

Trinny is as busy as ever this month, launching her (excellent) new Fearless Foundation, and agrees she’s too busy to fit in an operation if she can possibly avoid it. “I really am, and also if I do it, now I would maybe need to have it done again when I’m 90. I’d rather do it once, when I’m 70.’
Beyond tweaking her regime for creaking knees, Trinny tells us she has a few other additions she’s swearing by right now. Here’s what’s hitting the spot for her at 66.
Trinny London Fearless Skin Tint
This is a foundation she’s specifically created for 40+ skin, packing it with skincare actives for coverage that feels like serum. ‘We have to remember the skin underneath the foundation is drier, so we’ve put in things like ceramides, lipids, niacinamide, peptides, and hyaluronic acid,’ she says. ‘We’ve also found a technology that suspends the colour pigments so they really sink into the skin and don’t sit in lines. I wear this whenever I do TV, or for going out in the evening – it’s my polished look.‘But I also use it very buffed out during the day. It can be worn very sheer.’

Like most women her age, anything to improve sleep is a must. ‘I’ll tell you what I love, it’s a quirky thing – Moon Mist,’ she says. ‘It’s created by a man called Paolo, who used to be at Neville Hair. A lot of women say they feel unsettled around the full moon. And he created this that you put it on when it’s full moon. I don’t know what’s in it, but I have to f*cking tell you, it works. Because I’m no longer affected by the moon. All my friends are like, ‘It’s a full moon, that’s why I feel like this.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m fine!” I put it on before I go to bed and I sleep better.’

These pre-glued underlashes are created by Trinny’s long-term lash extensions guru, Edy, and she wears them whenever she can’t fit in a salon appointment. ‘I’m wearing them today and they are unbelievable,’ she says. ‘I think that mascara is brilliant but some women just have very short lashes, so I definitely recommend getting a false lash like this, which looks like real lashes but better.’

Trinny tells us she’s trying to get a little bit more protein in her diet: ‘I was probably doing 60 grams a day, I’m trying to do 90’. Her go-to breakfast is a 3-egg omelette although she admits ‘I have to change it because it’s really f*cking boring! But I’ve added in cottage cheese, which takes it from maybe 25g to 35-40g by the time I’ve walked out the door.’ An extra hit of protein comes at lunch from good old M&S and its multi-buy lunch bites. ‘I get a stack of three from the M&S deli section, and include things like the prawns and the hummus with carrots,’ she says. ‘That gets me to about 70g, and then in the evening I’ll have salmon or chicken with rice.’ Job done.
