Taylor Swift is set to become the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history after being named the first recipient of a new honour recognising musicians for their work behind the camera.
CBS and MTV have announced that Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honours at this year’s ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday.
The new award recognises artists whose directing work has helped advance music video and visual storytelling.
The honour will take Swift’s VMA tally to 31, moving her ahead of Beyoncé. The pair are currently tied as the most-awarded musicians in VMA history, with 30 awards each.
Swift is a seven-time nominee and four-time winner in the VMAs’ Best Direction category.
Her directing work includes videos and films such as The Fate of Ophelia, Opalite, The Man, All Too Well: The Short Film, Anti-Hero, Bejeweled and Fortnight.
The 14-time Grammy winner also has nine nominations at this year’s VMAs, including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, hosted by Snoop Dogg, take place in Los Angeles on Sunday 27 September.
