A Monaghan GP is warning that rural Ireland is facing a significant shortage of GPs, with patients in some areas waiting days for an appointment.
Dr Illona Duffy was speaking as concerns continue over access to GP services, with more than half of people in rural Ireland reportedly waiting two days or more to be seen.
She said County Monaghan has around 50 GPs per 100,000 people, compared with the HSE recommendation of 100, making it one of the worst served areas in the country.
Dr Duffy said high costs, a lack of cover and limited support are making it difficult for rural practices to attract younger doctors.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, she said people with urgent problems are being seen most of the time.
