Mayo GAA are mourning the loss of county chairperson Seamus Tuohy, whose death has been announced.
The Breaffy clubman took over as chair in 2021, this after his involvement in numerous administrative roles within the county, including as vice-chairman, chairperson of Bord na nÓg and chair of the CCC.
After a 75-year wait, Tuohy was at the helm as Mayo finally brought Sam Maguire back to the county on 26 July.
Following his passing, Mayo County Council have postponed the planned civic reception for Andy Moran’s squad, due to take place on Friday next.
A statement from the council’s head of communications, Martina Hughes, read: “On behalf of the cathaoirleach, the elected members, chief executive, Kevin Kelly, and the staff of Mayo County Council, I wish to extend our sincere sympathies to the Tuohy family and to his colleagues and friends throughout Mayo GAA at this difficult time.”
Meanwhile, Mayo GAA described his as someone who embodied the spirit of the county.
“Everybody involved in Mayo GAA is devastated to learn of the passing of our Chairperson, Seamus Tuohy.
“Seamus devoted a huge part of his life to Mayo GAA and to his beloved Breaffy GAA.
“His contribution to our association was immense, and his passing leaves a profound sense of loss across the county. For most of us, Seamus was not simply a chairperson or an administrator, he was a friend, a colleague, a mentor and someone who genuinely cared about people and about the future of Gaelic games in Mayo.”
“We will remember Seamus with enormous affection and gratitude,” the statement added.
“We will remember his passion, his determination, his generosity, his friendship, and, above all, his unwavering belief in Mayo and in the people of Mayo.
“May the work he did, the people he inspired and the vision he had for Mayo GAA continue to live on for generations to come.”
